5.3 Public Facilities

Christian Foundation for Public Health, YAKKUM Rehabilitation Centre was originally formed in 1982 and became an independent foundation in 1991. YAKKUM provides medical, social and vocational rehabilitation programs at a facility in Yogyakarta.

The National Vocational Rehabilitation Center for Disabled People, which is a project supported by JICA, is currently engaged in a number of activities that aim to develop a comprehensive vocational rehabilitation system for persons with disability that covers all aspects of the field, ranging from vocational guidance and evaluation to vocational training (metalworking, electronics, printing, computers, and garment manufacture). As a means of pursuing this goal, JICA is:

1. dispatching experts in such areas as vocational guidance and evaluation, staff training, and vocational training (metalworking, printing, etc.) from Japan,
2. accepting staff members of the center for training in Japan, and
3. training personnel in the system development and management fields.

Badan Koordinasi Kegiatan Kesejahteraan Sosial (BKKKS) works in Yogyakarta and heads a network of smaller organizations engaged in community development. BKKKS provides its member organizations with training and works with them on child welfare programs, social welfare programs for people with disabilities and the elderly, and Trickle Up entrepreneurship programs. These organizations, under the close supervision of BKKKS, now often implement Trickle Up using cooperatives and revolving savings groups. Entrepreneurs in these groups build businesses together, such as tofu processing or animal husbandry, dividing responsibilities and duties, and saving collectively. This builds community cohesion and strengthens local savings practices, enabling entrepreneurs to gradually build their businesses.
