2. Statistical Data on Disability Profile

According to the Department of Social Welfare, its voluntary registration system for PWDs totaled approximately 108,000 people as of June 2002. This is compared to 98,452 as of the end of 2000. The break-down by type of disability as of 2000 was as follows

According to the Malaysia Medical Association, there was an estimated 139,000 PWDs in 1980, of which only 14% were registered with the Department of Social Welfare.
