Overall Goal

Empowerment of PWD and Promotion of a Barrier-free Society in Developing Countries in the Asia-Pacific region

*SHO of PWD can be one of the most effective agents to empower PWD through self-help activities and promote a barrier-free society by self-advocacy.

Objectives of the Seminar

  1. to develop the capacity of national cross-disability SHO (or relevant organizations) in alignment with the international disability movement by sharing update information and their experiences
  2. to advocate common needs/issues identified by national cross-disability SHO in the Asia-Pacific region through the development of a common statement
  3. to promote the Asia-Pacific regional network among national cross-disability SHO
  4. to facilitate further disability awareness/movement in the country who hosts the Seminar

*The Seminar in 2004 will be implemented by the APCD's focal point (NCCD: National Coordination Council on Disability) in Viet Nam.

  • JICA Overseas (e.g., Viet Nam) Office whose country hosts the Seminar

Target Participants for the Seminar

Main Target Participants

25 representatives of national cross-disability SHO or equivalent organizations from 25 developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region

Other Expected Participants

25 local participants from the following organizations in Viet Nam:

  • Representatives of self-help groups/clubs of PWD (*In Viet Nam, there is no national cross-disability SHO.)
  • Government officials responsible for disability issues
  • Representatives of relevant NGO to support PWD in Viet Nam

Other Participants for the Seminar

Resource Persons

Upon necessity for the Seminar, international resource persons will be invited from the Asia-Pacific region. Local resource persons from Viet Nam will be also invited when necessary.

Self-Sponsored Participants

Representatives of relevant organizations, who are not invited by the Seminar Organizer (APCD) with necessary financial supports, can apply to the Seminar. The Seminar Organizing Committee in Viet Nam in cooperation with the Seminar Organizer (APCD) will provide the details of application process, necessary cost for them to bear, etc, upon request.

13 -17 December, 2004 (5 days)
Day Session: 08:30 - 17:30 except 12:00 - 13:00 for Lunch (8 hours)
Evening Session (Optional): 19:00 - 21:00
